Steve Shriver is a young man from Texas who joined the US Army and was later sent to fight in Iraq. While there he participated in numerous missions, including road block duty with his squad. During one of these details, he and the squad are led into an urban ambush, resulting in death and injury to many of the men. Upon the unit's return to Texas, they are greeted as heroes. Although he probaby has served four or more years based on his successful rise in rank to sergeant, he and buddy SSG King plan to leave the military now that their contracts are up. While King goes AWOL to avoid returning to Iraq through stop-loss, Shriver reenlists to get into sniper school and is the faithful soldier, working to get King back. After a questionably short time home, maybe a month, he and the unit mobilize to return to the Iraq War. During the time home, he is shown to be a heavy drinker, physically fit, vulgar, a brawler (even hitting his girlfriend), unwilling to commit to marriage, but loyal to the army and his army buddies and drives a Jeep.

He's getting better with some medication though his engagement is over.
